Monte Argentario is known for its unique beauty and is a popular destination with people staying in Maremma.
Monte Argentario is linked to the mainland by a man-made isthmus and by two sandy stretches of land. Located between these two beaches is the Laguna di Orbetello, which has been named a protected oasis by the WWF on account of flora and fauna species there. The main villages to stay in around Monte Argentario are Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.
Porto Santo Stefano is a vibrant, colourful village built around two natural ports, the departure point for boats travelling to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. Staying in Porto Santo Stefano allows you to benefit from the various services on offer in the village and be close to the best beaches in Argentario. You’ll also be able to visit the Mediterranean Acquarium, which is suitable for adults and children.
At the base of the Rocca Spagnola, Porto Ercole has expanded along the bay, the shape of which has created a port area, which is home to bars and restaurants and offers a wonderful place to take a stroll on a summer evening. If you'd like to visit Porto Ercole’s beaches during your holiday in Argentario, we recommend renting a rubber dinghy. However, the sandy Spiaggia della Feniglia beach is easy to get to, located a couple of kilometres back from Porto Ercole.
As well as Monte Argentario, one of the most famous seaside holiday destinations in the Maremma area is Castiglione della Pescaia. Thanks to its sea, views and beaches, Castiglione della Pescaia has been awarded Legambiente’s 5 Vele award, the highest honour for a resort.
