Villa Irene is located within the wonderful Plemmirio Nature Reserve, just 400 m away from the sea, close to the Lighthouse south of Syracuse, and near to the famous Elephant Rock. The latter is the perfect place for lovers of diving, bird watching, mountain biking, yoga and any other sport in full contact with nature. Sport lovers can also take walks through the Mediterranean scrubland, along the rocky promontory.
Syracuse is a beautiful Baroque city, whose name comes from the Siculo (an ancient Sicilian tribe) word "Syraka", meaning "abundance of water" for the numbers of springs and rivers in the area.
The city developed in part on the promontory-island of Ortigia, and in part on the mainland. The island of Ortigia, now linked to the mainland by a short bridge, was the first part of Syracuse to be settled, and is today a jewel of Sicilian Baroque, though also retaining fascinating traces of its ancient Greek and medieval past.
The most interesting area on the mainland is the archeological zone, including one of the largest Greek theatres in Italy, whose excellent acoustics you will experience if you manage to attend the annual season of ancient Greek drama.
We also suggest a visit to Noto (35 km), a Baroque jewel of Val di Noto, a geographical area of south east Sicily dominated by the limestone Iblean plateau. Decimated by an enormous earthquake in 1693, the towns of this valley were rebuilt in what came to be known as the "Sicilian baroque style".
