Villa Sonnino is an Old Renaissance country dwelling, nestled in the hills of the Chianti Classico, in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti (6 km), and just 3 km away from the village of Radda in Chianti.
Its imposing façade dominates the hill in front of the delightful medieval villages of Radda in Chianti and Volpaia, which can also be admired from the panoramic terrace placed on the first floor of the building.
Surrounded by a well-kept garden with lawn, the property boasts a private swimming pool (14 x 6 m), equipped with parasols, deck chairs, sunbeds, trampoline and a barbecue area. The swimming pool is open from 1st May to 3rd November (dates may vary according to season).
Among the outdoor spaces there is also a tennis court and a table tennis for the amusement of both adults and children.
Thanks to its wn private consecrated chapel, dating back to 1584 and dedicated to Magdalena de' Pazzi), Villa Sonnino is the ideal location for weddings and ceremonies, but also meetings and various events.
The owners of the villa are also wine producers so they offer guests the possibility to:
- visit the beautiful historic cellars underneath the villa, excavated in the rock and vaulted by a brick cross vault;
- taste thier Chianti Classico wine and other wines in their wine shop, situated inside the villa and open to the public.
Lastly, the reception and the staff are available for every kind of request.
A brief history of the villa:
In the 15th century, the villa was a village of 6-7 houses that belonged to a large landowner of the area, Giovanni di Cecchino da Panzano.
In 1621, it became the property of the Florentine Giannozzo da Cepparello, and in 1714, passed on to some exponents of the Pianigiani family, originally from Radda in Chianti. During that period, it was transformed from a castle into a Renaissance villa with a courtyard, vegetable garden, oil mill and cellar.
In 1852, it was sold to Ferdinando Strozzi, senator of the Kingdom of Italy from 1860.
In 1892, Baron Giorgio Sonnino, brother of Sidney (who was the Prime Minister in 1906 and 1909), took over from the Strozzi family. Since then there will be a strengthening of the farm that will have a total extension of 650 hectares.
More recently, the villa has belonged for several decades to the Tognana Family.
Several historical personalities have stayed in this villa, including in 1898 the Queen Margherita of Savoy, the First Queen of Italy, wife of Umberto I of Savoy.
The property (1000 sqm), set on 2 floors, can accommodate up to 14 people for a total of 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms (including 1 toilet). The interior spaces are characterized by the richness of detail and antique furnishings, which are expertly mixed with contemporary design furniture.
On request and for an additional price, there are 4 other apartments available (2 located inside the main villa and 2 in the nearby dependance), able to accommodate a total of 20 extra people. More precisely: two apartments can sleep up to 4 people each; the other two apartments can sleep up to 6 people each.
Please note that these apartments, even though very well cured, are not luxury apartments and they have not the same standards of the main villa.
If only the main villa is rented, these apartments will be closed.
Ground floor: On the ground floor you will find the living area as follows: a large entrance hall, a kitchen (with oven, microwave, hob, mixer and dishwasher), 2 dining rooms (one of which has a fireplace), a living room, a toilet and a laundry (with washing machine and ironing set). Tha laundry is also accessible from a lateral entry.
Also on this floor, guests can also admire the museum of the villa that houses a collection of historical documents of the Strozzi family and the Baron Sonnino, some letters from Queen Margherita of Savoy and some objects of everyday use from the late 19th century.
First floor: On the upper floor there are another 2 living rooms: one with a fireplace and the other with direct access to the terrace from which you can admire a splendid view of the vineyards and the villages of Radda in Chianti and Volpaia.
Following the sleeping area made up of 7 bedrooms (all with A/C from June 2020), all furnished in style, with terracotta floors and private bathrooms. More specifically:
- 1 single bedroom with balcony overlooking the cypress avenue and bathroom (shower);
- 1 double bedroom with views of the vineyards, desk and bathroom (bathtub and shower);
- 1 double bedroom with views of the vineyards and bathroom (old bathtub and shower);
- 1 double bedroom with large bathroom (bathtub and shower);
- 1 double bedroom with a bureau and a bathroom (bathtub and shower);
- 1 double bedroom overlooking the vineyards towards Radda in Chianti and bathroom (shower);
- 1 suite consisting of: 1 double canopy bed, 1 single bedroom, 1 frescoed living room with sofa and two armchairs, fireplace, table for 6 people and television, a bathroom (bathrub and shower).

- Private chef: 210,00€ per meal, so lunch + dinner 420,00€ (the cost of the ingredients is not included);
- Chef for the whole week, one meal a day (lunch or dinner of your choice), the total price for 7 days is 1.200,00€ (excluding costs of ingredients)
Security Deposit: Customers are required to pay in advance (bank transfer) 1.000,00€ security deposit upon arrival (cash), which will be returned at the end of the stay upon damages.
Villa Sonnino is located in Vistarenni, in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti (6 km), and just 3 km away from Radda in Chianti (3 km). The wonderful area of Chianti Classico is known worldwide for the prestigious wine to which it gives birth (the typical emblem of the Gallo Nero) and for its evocative sceneries and charming villages which are along the “Via Chiantigiana”, from the nearby Greve to Panzano, from Castellina to Radda.
Siena, the splendid medieval city full of tradition and artistic masterpieces, is just 30 minutes away by car.
It is also worth visiting the countryside of Siena: here you will find other medieval gems, of incomparable charm and still remained intact, like Monteriggioni, San Gimignano and San Galgano.
In the village of Gaiole in Chianti you can find all basic shops (grocery sore, bakery, butcher, newsstand...) and some restaurants and bars.
For shopping lovers, it is advisable to go to The Mall (40 km), a luxury outlet centre where you can find the most famous Italian and International high fashion brands.
For sports lovers, you can relax along pleasant walks, hike or ride bikes (either road or mountain bike) in the heart of Chianti country along the route of the Eroica or you can horse-ride.
Lastly, for those looking for relax, we recommend a visit to the nearby spas of Rapolano (40 km) and Petriolo (60 km).
