The area

The 13th arrondissement is a rather large district of Paris that is residential, quiet, and is located outside the traditional tourist area but is not without great interest and particularity. The most significant attractions in this area, especially for lovers of contemporary architecture, are the François Mitterand National Library and the whole Paris Rive Gauche district, an ambitious urban project designed by names like Christian de Portzamparc or Norman Foster, including several contemporary buildings used as offices or administrative centers of France. For lovers of the more traditional Paris, in the neighborhood there is the Manifacture des Gobelins, a wonderful 17th century structure commissioned by Henry IV for the production of tapestries and carpets, and the Butte aux Cailles, a delightful hill dominated by windmills at the time, currently a residential area with small villas, picturesque views, bars, and restaurants ideal for relaxing after a day in the chaotic capital. Under the Butte on Blanqui Boulevard on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays there is one of the most important food markets in the city, at affordable prices.
