Florence city centre: World Heritage by UNESCO in 1982

The city centre is enclosed within the tracks of the old medieval wall, and it houses the most important cultural and artistic sights of Florence.

Right on Duomo square is the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, Giotto’s tower and the ‘Battistero di San Giovanni’ featuring the famous ‘Porte del Paradiso’ by Lorenzo Ghiberti.

Heading north you find the Palazzo Medici Riccardi by Michelozzo, the Basilica di San Lorenzo by Filippo Brunelleschi, which houses the precious sacristy by Donatello and Michelangelo, and San Marco Museum with Beato Angelico’s masterpieces.

The Galleria dell’Accademia, with the famous Michelangelo’s David, is also to be found in the immediate vicinity, as well as the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata and the ‘Loggiato degli Innocenti’ by Brunelleschi.

At the very heart of Florence city centre is the Piazza della Signoria, comprising the Palazzo Vecchio and the stunning Galleria degli Uffizi, and the Bargello, the world’s leading museum dedicated to Reinassance sculpture.
